How to Hang a Macrame Plant Hanger Without Drilling (Renter-Friendly Ideas)

A macrame plant hanger looks best when it floats — but not everyone can drill into a ceiling. If you rent, live with concrete ceilings or simply don't want holes, there are still good options. This guide covers six no-drill ways to hang a plant hanger, how to check the weight safely, and how to choose the right length and pot size.

Can you hang a plant hanger without drilling?

Yes. The easiest no-drill options are a curtain rod you already have, a tension rod inside a window recess, a freestanding plant stand or clothing rail, an exposed beam, or an over-the-door hook. Adhesive ceiling hooks work only for very light setups. Whatever you choose, the support has to carry the weight of the pot, soil and water — not just the rope.

6 ways to hang a plant hanger without drilling

  1. An existing curtain rod. Slide or hook the top ring of the hanger over a sturdy curtain rod. The plant gets window light and you need no new hardware. Keep to lighter pots, since curtain rods are designed for fabric, not heavy loads.
  2. A tension rod in a window recess. A spring-loaded tension rod wedged inside a window frame gives you a hanging bar with no screws. It suits small herbs and trailing plants in the kitchen or bathroom.
  3. A freestanding plant stand or clothing rail. A plant hanging stand or a sturdy clothing rail lets you place the plant anywhere in the room — and move it with the seasons.
  4. An exposed beam. If you have wooden beams, loop a strong cord or S-hook over the beam and hang the plant from it.
  5. An over-the-door hook. A metal hook over the top of a door works for a light plant in a hallway or bedroom. Check that the door still closes smoothly.
  6. Adhesive ceiling hooks — with care. Removable adhesive hooks are only suitable for very light hangers and small plants. Check the weight rating on the pack, stay well below it, and never hang a plant above a bed, sofa or walkway on adhesive alone.

Prefer something on the wall? A macrame wall hanging planter on a wooden dowel needs only one wall hook, and the macrame fruit basket also hangs from a single hook.

How heavy is a hanging plant?

Heavier than most people expect. The hanger itself is light — our cotton plant hangers weigh from about 28 g to around 220 g depending on the style — but a ceramic or terracotta pot with wet soil can weigh several kilograms. The simplest check: weigh the potted plant on a kitchen or bathroom scale right after watering, and choose a support rated for clearly more than that.

Plastic nursery pots inside the hanger are much lighter than ceramic or terracotta, which makes no-drill setups easier.

Which hanger length should I choose?

Length Best for
80–90 cm Lower ceilings, curtain rods, shelves and small nooks
105 cm Standard rooms — the most versatile length
122–130 cm High ceilings and statement corners
145–179 cm (multi-tier) Two or three pots on one hanger, tall windows and stairwells

Our jute plant hanger and jute macrame plant hanger come in 85, 90, 105 and 122 cm. Most of our cotton hangers are 105 cm, and the multi-tier cascade reaches 145–179 cm.

What pot size fits a macrame plant hanger?

Measure the pot at its widest point and compare it with the pot size on the product page:

  • Most of our cotton macrame hangers fit pots of 12–18 cm (4.7–7.1 in).
  • The jute hangers fit pots of 15–20 cm (5.9–7.8 in).
  • The macrame wall hanging planter fits pots up to about 12–15 cm (4.7–5.9 in).
  • The leather plant hanger has a 22 cm or 31 cm petal cradle.

Plant hanger FAQ

Is a curtain rod strong enough for a hanging plant?

For a small, light plant, usually yes. For large ceramic pots it is safer to use a plant stand or a proper ceiling hook.

Are adhesive hooks safe for hanging plants?

Only for very light setups and within the manufacturer's weight rating. Wet soil adds weight after every watering, so leave a generous margin.

Does the hanger come with a hook?

Our plant hangers do not include ceiling hooks or mounting hardware, so you can choose the support that suits your home.
