Table Runner Size Guide: Length, Width & Overhang for Every Table

A table runner is the quickest way to change the look of a dining table — but only if the size is right. Too short and it looks like a placemat; too long and it pools on the floor. Here are the simple rules.

How long should a table runner be?

For a classic look, the runner should hang 15–30 cm (6–12 in) over each end of the table. In other words: table length + 30 to 60 cm.

For a more modern look, you can do the opposite and choose a runner about 30 cm shorter than the table, so it stops inside the edges. Avoid anything in between — a runner that ends a few centimetres past the edge just looks like the wrong size.

Table runner size chart

Table Typical table length Runner length (with overhang)
4 seats 120–140 cm 160–180 cm
6 seats 160–180 cm 200–240 cm
8 seats 200–220 cm 240–260 cm
Coffee table, sideboard or console 90–120 cm 120–160 cm

Our boho paisley table runner comes in six lengths from 120 to 260 cm, so you can match it to most tables. Remember that tassels at the ends add a little extra length to the overall look.

How wide should a table runner be?

A good rule is about one third of the table width. Most dining tables are 80–100 cm wide, so a runner of 30–40 cm leaves enough space for plates on both sides. The paisley runner is 35 cm (13.8 in) wide, which suits standard dining tables.

Runners on round and square tables

  • Round table: lay one runner across the diameter with the same overhang on both sides, or cross two runners for a more festive look.
  • Square table: two runners crossing in the centre create four equal place settings.
  • Wide table: lay several runners across the width, one in front of each pair of guests, instead of one down the middle.

What about tablecloths?

For a tablecloth, the overhang is called the drop. For everyday dining, a drop of 15–30 cm on each side is comfortable: guests can sit without the fabric falling into their laps. So a tablecloth should measure table length + 30–60 cm and table width + 30–60 cm. Floor-length drops are for formal or event tables.

A tablecloth and runner can also be layered: a neutral crochet lace tablecloth underneath, with a patterned runner on top, or a natural burlap and lace table runner for a rustic setting.

Table runner FAQ

Should a table runner hang over the edge?

Either 15–30 cm over each end, or clearly shorter than the table. Both look intentional; a few centimetres over the edge does not.

Can I use a table runner on a coffee table or sideboard?

Yes. Use the same rule: either a small overhang at each end or a runner that stays inside the edges.

How do I keep a table runner flat?

Iron it on the setting stated on the care label or hang it for a day before use. Store it rolled rather than folded to avoid creases.
