Macrame Wall Hanging Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Size for Your Wall

A macrame wall hanging that is too small looks lost; one that is too large crowds the furniture below it. The good news: two simple measurements solve most of the guesswork. This guide explains how to size a macrame piece for the wall you have, how high to hang it, and which of our pieces fits where — with every size in centimetres and inches.

How big should a macrame wall hanging be?

Above furniture, aim for a hanging that is roughly half to two-thirds as wide as the piece below it. On an empty wall, let the wall itself set the scale: a single statement piece or a small group should take up a clear, balanced share of the space rather than float in the middle of it. For a wide statement piece above a bed or sofa, start with our Large Macrame Wall Hanging.

  • Above a 160–180 cm bed or a three-seat sofa: choose a wide piece of about 100–120 cm, or group two or three medium pieces.
  • Above a console, dresser or desk: a medium piece of 40–60 cm wide usually looks right.
  • Narrow walls, beside a window or door: choose a slim vertical piece — long and narrow rather than wide.
  • Gallery walls: round pieces of 24–30 cm mix easily with frames, mirrors and baskets.

How high should I hang a macrame wall hanging?

On an open wall, place the centre of the piece at about eye level — roughly 145–155 cm from the floor. Above furniture, leave about 15–25 cm between the top of the sofa, headboard or console and the lowest point of the fringe, so the two read as one composition. The same rule works for a large crochet lace dreamcatcher with feathers above a headboard.

Fringe moves slightly: allow a few extra centimetres above a headboard so it does not brush against it.

One large piece or several small ones?

One large piece gives a calm, finished look and works best on a wall you see from a distance, such as above a bed or sofa. A group of two or three smaller pieces feels more collected and personal. When grouping, keep 5–10 cm between pieces and align either their tops or their centres so the arrangement looks intentional. For a relaxed group, try a round piece such as the Ginkgo Leaf Macrame Wall Hanging next to our wooden Moon Phase Wall Art Set, and find more styling ideas in our boho living room guide.

How do I hang a macrame wall hanging?

Most lighter pieces hang from a single nail or wall hook rated for light decorative loads; the hardware is usually not included, so check the product page. The large 120 × 140 cm hanging loops over a rod, branch or dowel of your choice. For heavier items such as the macrame wall shelf, use a hook and wall plug suited to your wall type and the weight you plan to place on the shelves. Want greenery on the wall too? Macrame wall hanging size FAQ

What size macrame goes above a queen bed?

A queen bed is around 150–160 cm wide, so a piece of roughly 80–120 cm wide — or a group of two or three medium pieces — keeps the proportions balanced. For a softer look above the bed, see the Large White Dreamcatcher in crochet lace.

Can I hang macrame in a small room?

Yes. In small rooms, a slim vertical piece makes the ceiling feel higher, while a single round piece of about 30 cm adds texture without taking over. The Triangle Macrame Dreamcatcher is one slim option.

Does the size include the fringe?

For our pieces, the length is measured to the end of the fringe unless the product page says otherwise.
